Eddy Young

Roy Edwards from Canada writes:

In one of my previous notes to you I mentioned “Eddy” Young as a possible member of OPS He was at Price’s during the period 1931(?) to 1938 or 1939 when he joined the RNVR and had a distinguished service as skipper of an MTB in the Adriatic and around Iceland. He was showing definite interest in the OPS but was regrettably hit by a massive, and fatal, stroke on September 19th.

Prize Winners 1964

Here is the list of prize-winners from the CD version of the Lions. Can you put the names to the faces?

Names for the photograph...only a few though:
Row 1, L-R: no 1: Greg Parsons, no 2: Ian Kenway
Row 2, L-R, no 6: Nick Cotton, no 8: Phil Crawshaw
Back row, far right leaning forward, with specs: Neil Astley (I think).

regards to all,

Kev O'Carroll
Hello Michael.

I was fascinated to see the 1964 prizewinners photo submitted recently by Robin Ward - I had never seen it before, even though I am on it!

Robin says "Maybe someone else can put more names to more faces". Well, in the second-to-last row at the back, starting from the left-hand aisle, there is a younger boy I do not know, then four Upper VI formers, viz. myself, Colin Knowlton(I think), Neil Auckland and Peter Domone.

I'm afraid after all these years the names of the others escape me.

Best wishes,
Mike Bayliss

Swimming pool - coldest in UK????

Mike....
It certainly was not just you......I seem to recall most boys emerging from the that pool the same colour as the water !!
I also seem to remember the poor individuals who occasionally forgot their swimming trunks, and were made to go in starkers. Just imagine the furore that would cause these days....fortunately, I was not one of those poor wretches.
I may have, somewhere, some pictures of the 250th anniversary celebrations in 1971 . If I can find then I shall make them available, but don't hold out too much hope.
Regards,Kev O'Carroll

Tuck Shop

I attended Prices's 1960-64. During my stay there the tuck shop was no longer in the tin hall; that building wasn't even used as the woodwork shop any more. In fact for most of my first year there the "tin hut" - with the old toilets sited immediately behind it - was our classroom (1A) and we had Mr Alderson as form master. I seem to remember it ended its days as the CCF "Quatermaster's Stores".
(The CCF another good topic for memories?)

In my day the tuck shop was always on the ground floor of the "old building" .. opposite the stairs. I recall they sold items there which were never available anywhere else: "Spud Puffs" and "Mint Bingos" . I never came across these elsewhere, either before or since. They also sold some cheese flavoured crisp-type items, though I forget what they were called. Again, unobtainable elsewhere.

PETE BEWERS

Bert Shaw

Interesting reading a 1963 "Salvete" page out of an old "Lion", particularly as I immediately noticed it contained an error. A certain B. St. G. Butler-Davis is shown as arriving in IVA in the Summer term of 1963. This would have been Brinsley St. George Butler- Davis, who was in the same form as myself in both 1A (1960-61) and 2A (1961-62). I seem to remember him LEAVING when we were all in 3A (i.e. 1963). He should have been on the "Valete"
page, and as being in 3A not in IVA. Alastair Muir and Dick Boyce (also mentioned) DID join Price's in 1963 in the third form - I do remember that. So the page appears to be otherwise correct. I wonder if Mr. Butler-Davis ever noticed this mistake; as he left, he probably never collected his copy of "the Lion".

The page on Bert Shaw's retirement also brings back memories as I recall that on the announcement of his retirement during "Assembly", Bert got a resounding and spontaneous cheer from the whole school which actually moved him to tears. Certainly, he was a disciplinarian of the old school, which by the mid-sixties made him a little like a fish out of water. Nonetheless, he was popular with the boys and this despite his "hands-on" attitude to chastisement. The sort of methods that could land a teacher in court, even gaol, these days. You wouldn't keep your job at all, never mind for 38 years! Being unsporty, I was never one of Bert's favourite pupils. Notwithstanding this I did get on well with him and he had a lot of respect for me. I'd missed a month's tuition just days into my first year at Price's after breaking my shin bone in a football game. On returning to the school in mid-October I found myself clueless in Latin lessons. For about a week Bert gave me extra tuition after school and was pleased with the speed with which I managed to catch up. So much so that he publicly praised my progress to the whole assembled school at the end of the year (and much to my embarrasment!!). It is because of this that I always associate him with school Latin - despite the incredulity with which some old boys have greeted the idea of him ever having taught the subject.

PETE BEWERS (1960-66)
Can give some more names to the basket ball team submitted by Roy(aka Sid) Smith:

front row: l-r: Ian Wallace, Nicky Rylatt, Geoff Vote, Roy Smith,

back row: l-r: Chris Packer, John Perry, unknown, Phil Withers.

I would date this picture as after April 1965.

The last time I saw Chris Packer was at St.John's School, Singapore, sometime shortly after I left Price's in January 65. Chris had certainly left Singapore by September 1965. Incidentally, other Singaporean Old Pricean's I know about are Kevin O'Carroll, RA (Dick) Boyce, Roy Parkinson and of course my brother Michael (MS) Crawshaw. There must be more!

I returned to Price's in September 1966, and ended up playing in the 1st XV with Nicky, JJ Perry and Roy Smith.

As I recall Steve Simpson and 'Sid' Smith were a great half back combination in 1967/8.

Best wishes,

Phil Crawshaw (1961-68)
