Attached is a scan with three photo's, the top one is Silvers as it was in 1948 and the second sometime later (probably 1951) with myself standing outside (my father managed the shop for over 20 years) the bottom one is a view of the School taken in the sixties, probably '62 or
'63 about 5 years after I left and I visited the school as part of my job. I do not know who the two masters are.
My abiding memories of the CCF can be summarised as below:-
1.0 Join the RAF section and sit in a nice warm classroom learning
navigation rather than doing square bashing.
2.0 The discovery on one excercise that if the barrel of a 'Bren' was
stuffed into a bank it would fire on 'automatic' even when using blanks.
It did not do the gun any good though!
3.0 RAF camp one Easter to RAF Watton in Norfolk where a Sergeant
(whose name is long forgotton) drove up and down the runway in a Landrover at night with lights and shotguns mounted shooting the gulls!
Doing 'bumps and circuits' in 'Cambridge' aircraft (whatever they were) while the regular aircrew tried to make us sick - and quite often succeeded. A trip to RAF Waddington where we saw V bombers doing ground tests of their engines- the noise!!
4.0 Another excercise where we were 'an amphibious landing', formed up
on the beach and stormed inland onto the Browndown Ranges carrying 303's, Bren's etc, much to the surprise of civilians passing along the public road that seperated the range from the sea at that point!
5.0 At the Annual Parade the RAF Section nearly always outperformed
the Army at marching etc etc , too much training we suspected - the Army had 'burnt out'!
Regards,
Gerry Potter
